The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the capital recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy limits.
Fireworks Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that engulfs the city as winter sets in.
Nevertheless in recent months, the current regional leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during designated hours throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was considerable flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city recorded air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe levels recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
The dangerously high levels of air contamination in the city have persisted as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe records ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest city.
Various Contamination Contributors
This crisis in Delhi is caused by a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of farming communities.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing dangerous smog that becomes contained over the city as winter air descends.
Medical and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various research.
These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing approximately 10k early fatalities per year in Delhi.
