The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device

Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a major film company and introducing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the insignia pinned to her outfit.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
