The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
