Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Fans

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Context for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Controversies and Media Attention

The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its modern-era title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing effort to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or financial standing.
